Great great folk rockers! Two unique voices in rock history. The Youngbloods infused more of a jazzy feel as they progressed to "Elephant Mountain". I first heard it while crashing at a friends pad in SF...played it all night and still blows my mind. A few of you were lucky enough to have seen Jesse and CO at their peak. What a three piece miracle they were. Brewer & Shipley were unimpressed by the LA lifestyle and fled their label and California. They ended up in Kansas playing songs of war, protest, patriotism and marijuana from the heartland.
Brewer and Shipley are often called one hit wonders but WEEDS and Tarkio are AMAZING, start to finish. Great stoner folk rock all round!! Some of the early harmonizing of Brewer & Shipley is very similar to my ears of the Youngbloods and I love them both, nothing derivative from either ! They fill my soul.
Lets share our favorite songs by these great artists.

Elephant Mtn cover art was cool..it always fascinated me to observe how the "pile" repeated the shape of the distant mountain. The pile of crap was on this side of the stone fence and the greener grass and music and mountain were on the other side...there must be some deeper meaning there!!

Best "easy rider" themed song that did NOT appear in the MOVIE....
Rise Up (Easy Rider) by Brewer & Shipley http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGDRzQ33nbo
And my favorite from Jesse & co....a guitar god anthem. Darkness, Darkness by the Youngbloods

This is realy bizarre! Haven't checked in here for over a week, but this morning what did I grab to play in the car? A Youngbloods 1971 boot. Must be something in the air... |

One that's stayed with me for years. Was it called "Song by the Platte River?"
"I said my God, what have they done they've got my freedom on the run ..."
And, "The Light." I crashed with a friend in Florida for a weekend once and we stayed up all night figuring out what that was about! I'm afraid a few herbal plants may have given their lives for that discussion! |

a million years ago we bought Tarkio Rd for an uncle in Canada who had a record deck but no Proper Vinyl, amongst several others (including Buckley's Lorca! - easy listening? not all the way). He liked it. Of course One toke over the line was the one we sung a lot

Right Lizzy. So much of B&S's music is relevant today.
Here is the one you mentioned Lizzy...just listened to it yesterday...they seem to impart their "everything" into each song!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZB5pbLFEuA
And of course Tarkio Road...what a nice gift Lizzy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUbi4QeeN_c&feature=related
"...24 hours above our fence & 55 years of pollution, everyone knows how the puzzle was laid, but can anyone recall the solution?"
All the fine lyrics here..... http://www.top40db.net/Lyrics/?SongID=71397 If you're looking for some trouble, you can find it on Tarkio Road
And the "classic" version on the LAWRENCE WELK SHOW!!!....do they have any idea what they are singing??? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ye3ecDYxOkg&feature=related
